Kнига — мой единственный друг, который мне объясняет непонятное, или разгоняет мучающие мысли и заменяет их другими, иногда такими новыми и чудными.
— Елена Штакеншнейдер

From all these indignities ... you can deliver yourselves if you try, not by taking action, but merely by willing to be free. Resolve to serve no more, and you are at once freed. I do not ask that you place hands upon the tyrant to topple him over, but simply that you support him no longer; then you will behold him, like a great Colossus whose pedestal has been pulled away, fall of his own weight and break into pieces.
— Etienne De La Boetie

The name for this site comes from Chekhov's famous short story Ward No. 6. Sometimes it feels that the world around us looks more and more like the mental asylum so brilliantly described by Chekhov.

For many years, I have been taking notes on books I read. Not only do the books provided intellectual stimulation, they also provided explanations to many problems around us. I decided to make my notes public after many years: since they've helped me so much maybe they'll help you too.

This site is a work in progress. I plan to add many more books, but this is a start. My book notes make up the bulk of the site, but I may occasionally add my own thoughts
